Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) is the Artist of the Month for February. We discussed the painting "The Gulf Stream" In our discussion, the students brought up how desperate his situation is. What would you do if you were in his position?

I would scream and call for help.

  2. I would wave my hands and make lots of noise to try to attract the ship near the horizon line. If it were slave ship, and I was the slave in the small boat, I would rather not die immeadiately by the water spout, but hopefully have a longer life returning to the slave ship.

I would remain extremely still and see if the sharks would go away, or wave my hands and scream to the ship in the background. In the case that I was a slave in the tiny boat and the other ship was a slave ship I would rather go back on the ship than get torn to shreds by the sharks, but then again that is a sign that I will not be treated like I am an object and be owned by various people. So in the end I would chose to go back to the slave ship (if it even is a slave ship).

  5. i would rather jump in the water to get it over with or try to swim to the closest shore and if that didnt work i would go to sleep and try to pretend it was all a dream.

  6. I would scream my head off for help, and hopefully another ship would come and rescue me. But also i would stay really still so i wouldn't be attacked by the sharks. If I was attacked and in the middle of the ocean surrounded by sharks, I would try to fight back!

  7. I would jump out of the boat and swim as far as i could without being killed/eaten by the sharks . even though i would be scared i would still do it to save myself from being a slave.
